Welcome to HML's 2021 Summer Reading Adventures!

This summer is sure to be pawsome!

Here at HML, we offer two summer reading programs. You can find out all the details by scrolling down and reading about each program, but here's a short description of each:

Read to Me is our program for children ages 0 to 12 who are mostly reading with help from grown-ups. For every 15 books children read (or have read to them!), they'll earn a free book, a badge sticker, and a raffle ticket they can use to enter into one of two raffles!
Independent Reader is our program for children ages 6 to 18 who have become... you guessed it, independent readers! Kids who are mostly or completely reading on their own should sign up for Independent Reader. Because these kids are reading longer books, they'll earn a book, badge button, and raffle ticket for every FIVE books they read.

Families can easily sign up together, which will let you log everyone's reading at once! When registering, select "Myself and Other Readers" and then fill out the information for the grown-up in your family first. From there, you can sign up as many kids as you need to. We have all kinds of programs planned to keep you busy as a bee this summer! Miss Kathryn will be hosting her usual weekly storytimes this summer outside in our beautiful park. Come soak up the sun while you discover the joys of reading. We also have exciting animal-inspired programs planned for kids in Huntington Park - and other Oneonta parks, too! Here's just some of what you can look forward to:

June 30th: 4:00 - 5:00 pm	July 8th: 1:00 - 3:00 pm	July 15th: 10 am - 12 pm	July 22nd: 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Skype a Scientist: Fish Ecologist Ages 8 - 12 \| Zoom We’re planning another chance to have a just-kids chat with a scientist this summer! More details coming soon	What's My Tail? Safari Hike Ages 5+ \| Wilber Park Grab your safari hats and meet us on the Lower Track at Wilber Park for a What’s My Tail? hike. How many tails can you correctly guess? At the end of your trip, you will receive a special tail craft to take home with you. Safari hats will be provided	Tales of the Creek with OCCA Ages 5+ \| Wilber Park From copepods to crayfish, aquatic environments are brimming with life! In this two-hour program, children will explore Oneonta Creek to learn about the fascinating creatures that call it home. Water shoes or footwear and clothing that can get wet are a must.	Flying Tails: Build a Kite Ages 8+ \| Neahwa Park Miss Kathryn and Bridget are teaming up to challenge YOU to investigate the secrets of good kite-flying. Join us in Neahwa park to build your very own kite and do some experiments to make your design the best it can be.

STEAM Ahead: Live Like an Animal Ages 8 - 12 \| Huntington Park Discover what nature can teach us about engineering at this fun STEAM program! Kids will research animal shelters and use what they learn to design innovative new human structures. Then they’ll build a miniature prototype with simple craft supplies to use when they pitch their great new idea!	Barnyard Adventures in the Park All Ages \| Huntington Park Goats, chickens, ponies, oh my! Are you ready for some barnyard fun at Huntington Park? Come on down to Huntington Park to pet, feed, and play with farm animals who are waiting to meet and greet you! Partnered with the Salvation Army.	Stuffed Animal Workshop Ages 4 - 12 \| Wilber Park Would you like to own your very own giraffe? Well now you can! Join us in Upper Wilber Park to listen to a giraffe themed storytime before filling your new giraffe friend with love and stuffing.	STEAM Ahead: Aviary Architect Ages 8 - 12 \| Neahwa Park Have you ever been enjoying the air conditioning inside on a super hot day and thought to yourself, “Boy, those poor animals outside must wish they had something like this.” Then this program is for you! Come on down to Neahwa Park to see if you can design a birdhouse roof that will help our feathered friends beat the summer heat.

Read to Me: For Picture Book Lovers!

This program is designed for children ages 0 to 12 who are mostly reading with help from grown-ups. You can earn points by reading books together with your family OR by completing missions we've created full of grrreat activities.

Each book you read will earn you 100 points. Every time you earn 1500 points (that's 15 books!), you'll level up and win a free book, a badge sticker, and a virtual raffle ticket! YOU get to choose which one of the two End of Summer raffles you want to put each of your tickets into.

If you reach Level 4, you'll also earn a special completion certificate for meeting our challenge goal for Read to Me kids. But don't stop there - there are a couple more levels after that to encourage you to keep reading!

End of Summer Raffles and Prizes

You have until August 13th to log books and activities to earn prizes and raffle tickets. Winners will be drawn shortly after.

Tails and Tales Basket: Animal Upon Animal game, Okapi stuffed animal, solar-powered aqua robot, The Barnabus Project by Terry Fan, and Dinosaur Neon & Glow Paint Kit
Fun in the Sun Raffle Basket: Kite, The Original Stomp Rocket, A New Green Day by Antoinette Portis, Sushi Go! card game, rock painting kit

At the end of summer, everyone will receive an achievement certificate AND a Stewart's Free Cone certificate!

Independent Reader: Hello, Chapter Books!

This program is designed for children, tweens, and teens ages 6 to 18 who are mostly reading on their own. (Of course, everyone from 1 to 100 likes to be read to sometimes, and those books still count!) You can earn points by reading books OR by completing missions we've created full of egg-cellent activities.

Each book you read will earn you 300 points. Every time you earn 1500 points (that's 5 books!), you'll level up and win a free book, a badge button, and a virtual raffle ticket. YOU get to choose which one of the two End of Summer raffles you want to put each of your tickets into.

If you reach Level 6, you'll also earn a special completion certificate for meeting our challenge goal for Independent Readers. But don't stop there - there are a few more levels after that to encourage you to keep reading!
